Rockingham County Middle School opened its doors in August 1999 to 870 students representing four different communities in Rockingham County. Previously, these students attended small K-8 or K-6 schools. Even though students were excited about the new middle school with the state-of-the art technology, skepticism remained. This fear was allayed when students, faculty, and parents assumed a feeling of owenership in the school. Throughout the school year, parent involvement was high and surveys from students, faculty, and parents yielded positive attitudes toward the school. The litmus test for the new RCMS was: Can the school achieve as the smaller schools did? As end-of-grade test data was received, RCMS achieved exemplary status and was named a School of Distinction. RCMS has continued a positive attitude and high scores throughout its 12 years of existence.
