A little about us...

Moss Street was built in 1964. Originally a school for grades 1 - 8, Moss Street has evolved through the years. Along the way, we have also been a Communications Technology Magnet school, a school with dual Year-round & Traditional schedules, and a K-3 school. Moss Street is now a Title I Pre-K through 5th grade school operating on the RCS traditional schedule. We house a HeadStart class as well. Our smaller student population allows us to provide a caring school-family atmosphere, with an emphasis on Math, Reading, and 21st-Century Technology skills, including multimedia communication classes to foster career-readiness for our students.

We are in our seventh year of practicing school-wide Conscious Discipline ®,  a life-changing social, emotional, educational  classroom-management program. Developed by Dr. Becky Bailey, Conscious Discipline focuses on safety, connection, and problem-solving skills. Based on current brain research, child-development information, and developmentally-appropriate practices, CD gives students the tools to resolve conflict, make considered decisions, and focus on learning.  Our staff is schooled in this program, and includes a CD team with extensive training.

Moss Street is committed to teaching all children to read on grade level, and our Guided Reading program enables our staff to work with individual readers and groups every day, making the most of reading time. In addition, we are the first school in Rockingham county, and the second school in NC, to implement the One Book, One School literacy program. The students, their families, and the staff all read the same book, one chapter a night, with discussions, activities, and a Parent night designed to instill a love of reading. We ask parents to read with their children, which strengthens parent-child relationships, at the same time building vocabulary and comprehension. The entire program  helps develop a stronger bond between home and school.

Moss Street’s staff is both enthusiastic about new experiences and energetic in regards to student learning.  Our teachers come from diverse backgrounds, which help us relate to all children.  The staff's dedication can be seen through the many hours that they work beyond the school day, and the easy affection and respect that exists between employees and students.  Our collective talents can be seen throughout our classrooms, as well as our community.

Moss Street has Active Boards in all classrooms, Pre-K through 5th grade, as well as in our Instructional Lab, Media Center, and Music room.  Activeboards allow our students to learn interactively and give our students the 21st Century skills necessary for their futures. We also have a Flex Lab, which gives our classes additional opportunities to work on Math, Reading, and Writing skills as a group. We have a well-stocked Media Center, an outdoor running/walking track, and Wii equipment for our PE classes.
