    June 18, 2010

This week at the General Assembly has been an interesting one for the NC Department of Public Instruction. Chris Minard has transitioned into a different position in the Department, and we have restructured our legislative team to work through the remainder of the session. For now, please direct your legislative questions and concerns to Adam Levinson (alevinson@dpi.state.nc.us).

Budget negotiations between the Senate and House continue, and we cannot confirm any significant movement toward resolution. Very little public discussion has taken place on the major budget issues. Unofficial word is that some progress is being made however, and that the final budget will be delivered by June 30 or soon thereafter.

Three committee meetings - the Senate and House Education Committees and the Joint Conference Committee on Transportation Appropriations - included discussion of issues related to public schools. A number of bills were voted on and passed to the floor, and some passed both chambers and have gone to the Governor. See below for a full listing of bills that affect public schools.

Next week (week of June 21), both the House and Senate Education Committees will meet (see their respective calendars at www.ncleg.net/LegislativeCalendar/).  Please scan the calendar to be sure you communicate to your legislators or to us any important information regarding bills that are scheduled for a hearing.

Below is a full listing of bills that impact public schools with each bill's status noted.  You can find copies of each of these bills using the "find bills by number" tool on the right-hand side of the General Assembly's website (www.ncleg.net).
