• Legislative News From Jones Street

    June 24, 2010

Word on the street is that the General Assembly is close to finalizing the budget and will do so by June 30. It also seems that your message about protecting the schools is being heard. We have not seen any new official budget report or special provisions this week, but informal conversations have indicated that Public Schools will see some relief in the conference budget. While the state revenue shortfall will still mean a significant overall cut to Public Schools, some cuts will not be as severe as they appeared in budget proposals released earlier this summer.

Keep those emails and phone calls to legislators coming - that’s the single most effective way to make sure your opinions inform their actions! Again, if you have any questions or concerns regarding legislative matters, please contact Adam Levinson at alevinson@dpi.state.nc.us.

Two committee meetings – the Senate and House Education Committees - included discussion of issues related to NC public schools. A number of bills were voted on and passed to the floor; some passed both chambers and have gone to the Governor. See below for a full listing of bills that affect public schools.

Next week (week of June 28), both the House and Senate Education Committees will meet (see their respective calendars at http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/LegislativeCalendar/).  Please scan the calendar to be sure you communicate to your legislators or to us any important information regarding bills that are scheduled for a hearing.
