    2012-13 Points of Pride  
     
    • RCS Boasts 975 21st Century Classrooms
    • All RCS' full-time, certified staff are provided laptops
    • In the fall of 2012, all RCS high schools students, grades 9-12, were provided a Google Chromebook (laptop) for home and school use (over 4,000)!
    • Held the 2012 RCS Educator’s Conference with 280+ sessions for employees.
    • Jon Williams, social studies teacher at McMichael High, was selected as the 2012-13 recipient of the Marcellus Waddill Excellence in Teaching Award, Secondary Level. This National award recognizes outstanding teachers who have graduated from Wake Forest University.

    • Rockingham County Schools Central Office/Johnson Street employees participated in the NC Be Active Summer Wellness Challenge. RCS was named the top worksite in the state for the highest average minutes per team. Additionally, the Hustlin’ Hokies team took gold with the highest average minutes and team Running Instruction won the most improvement award. 

    • McMichael High’s School Resource Officer, Shane Woodall, received a Certificate of Recognition from the NC Association of School Resource Officers.

    • Morehead High School's Army JROTC Department was named an Honor Unit of Distinction for the 2012-2013 school year.  This is the highest selection a JROTC unit can receive - placing them among the top 10 percent of JROTC programs in the nation.

    • Leaksville-Spray Elementary was named a Title I Reward School by the State Board of Education and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction for high student achievement progress over the last 3 years.  Placing Leaksville-Spray Elementary among the top 10 percent of Title I schools in the state.
    • RCS' district website has been recognized Nationally by the Center for Digital Education. The website won a "Best of the Web" honorable mention in the K-12 category - only four K-12 websites in the entire nation were recognized!
    • The Reidsville High School Robotics Team, "Hotbotz" won 1st place at the South Carolina Robotics Invitational and Workshops (SCRIW).
    • Dr. Shotwell, RCS Superintendent, was named the North Carolina 2012 Honor Administrator of the year by the North Carolina Music Educators Association (NCMEA).

    • Macey DeMoss, McMichael High - NCHSAA 3A State Women's Individual Tennis Champion.

    • For the third consecutive year, Nell Rose, Rockingham County Board of Education chair, was one of eight school board members in the state named to the distinguished All-State School Board by the North Carolina School Boards Association (NCSBA).

    • Dr. Shotwell, RCS Superintendent, was named the North Carolina 2012 Superintendent of the Year by the North Carolina School Community Health Alliance (NCSCHA).

    • Jessica Baron, a senior at Rockingham Early College High School (RECHS), received the Academic Excellence Award from Rockingham Community College (RCC).  Jessica was selected among all the students who attend RCC.

    • Leigh Jones, RCS Principal of the Year, was named the 2013 Piedmont-Triad Regional Principal of the Year. 

    • McMichael High was awarded the 2013 North Carolina Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (NCASCD) Lighthouse School Award for innovation, leadership, and excellence in student achievement. They were 1 of 5 schools in NC.
    • Morehead High Wrestling Team - NCHSAA 3A State Dual Team Runner-Up.
    • McMichael High Airforce JROTC Marksmanship Team 1st and 3rd place at the Air Force National Championships.  Charles Collins took the overall Individual 1st place and set a new National Record in the sporter class - kneeling.  Hunter Gilmore took 2nd place overall Individual.
    • Reidsville Middle received the 2012-2013 Exemplary Reading Award by the North Carolina Reading Association (NCRA).
    • Morehead High DECA students qualified to compete in the International Career Development Conference - Jenna FrenchKyle WeekleyAnthony Paul, Elizabeth PaulAnnie Kate SmithKatie Griffin, and Cheyenne Dunn
    • Carolina Gonzalez and Dillon Shelton from Western Rockingham Middle School and Cory Lockhart from McMichael High were selected, by audition, to perform at the American Choral Director’s Association (ACDA) National Conference in Dallas, Texas.

    • Sierra Jones, 10th grade student at Morehead High, was selected to participate in the 2013 Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics (SVSM) program at UNC-Charlotte.

    • Daniel Jeffries, McMichael High, ranked third chair in the euphonium section at the NC Bandmaster’s Association ninth and 10th grade All-State Honors Band audition and was invited to play with the All-State band during an honors clinic. 

    • Daniel Parrish, Rockingham County Middle, auditioned in the trumpet section for the All-State Honors Band and performed with the All-State band.
    • Positive Behavior Intervention Systems Program Awards - Green Ribbon Schools: Draper Elementary, Monroeton Elementary, and Western Rockingham Middle;  Model Ribbon Schools -  Dillard Elementary, Huntsville Elementary, Central Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, South End Elementary, Douglass Elementary, Holmes Middle, Reidsville Middle, and the SCORE Center/BTWLC

    • Rockingham County Schools is one of only four school districts in the state to receive an “A” from NC Transparency (nctransparency.com)! NC Transparency was created by the John Locke Foundation in an effort to encourage transparency among North Carolina’s governmental entities.

    • NCHSAA Indoor Track 3A Long Jump State Champion - Courtney Crawford, McMichael High

    • The class of 2013 earned $15,897,625 in scholarship offerings.
