Effective February 25, 2022, CDC is exercising its enforcement discretion to not require that people wear masks on buses or vans operated by public or private school systems, including early care and education/child care programs. CDC is making this change to align with updated guidance that no longer recommends universal indoor mask wearing in K-12 and early education settings.
Therefore, RCS will no longer require masks (effective 02-28-22) on school transportation to align with recent guidance. Face masks will be optional for employees and students on the bus.
January 3, 2022 Updates
During the December 10, 2021 board meeting, the RCS Board of Education voted on a policy and made face masks optional for all students and staff beginning January 4, 2022. In addition, all contact tracing would be removed from RCS and this would return to contact tracers affiliated with the Rockingham County Health Department as of January 3, 2022.
Based on Session Law 2021-130/Senate Bill 654, Part X requires public school units to adopt a policy regarding the use of face coverings by employees and students in response to COVID-19. Per the Session Law, the governing body of the public school district shall vote at least once a month on whether the face covering policy should be modified.
During the December 10, 2021 board meeting, the RCS Board of Education voted on a policy and made face masks optional for all students and staff beginning January 4, 2021. In compliance with Session Law 2021-130/Senate Bill 654, Part X, the Board of Education reviews their policy and consider any necessary revisions each month. The RCS Board of Education utilizes the RCS COVID-19 Case Count and the NC StrongSchoolsNC Toolkit.
At this time, RCS continues to make face masks optional at this time.
