Below you will find additional information about our Academically/Intellectually Gifted (AIG) program. Click on the find out more tab for additional resources including CogAT Test, AIG Plan and student characteristics.

If you have questions or concerns about the AIG program or your child's AIG services, please contact Mrs. Lisa Miller, AIG Lead Teacher for Rockingham County Schools at 634-3209, extension 49221.

Each spring, the identification/placement teams at the elementary and middle schools review multiple sources of data to determine the best placement for current AIG students the next year and to consider new AIG placements for the upcoming school year. No student is exited from the program unless it is requested by the parent. Any parent, teacher, student, or community member who has academic knowledge of a student can submit a student's name to the school's Instructional Coach for possible consideration as placement in the AIG Program. In order for a student to be placed in the Rockingham County Schools' Academically and/or Intellectually Gifted Program, the placement criteria must be met.

The vision and mission of Rockingham County Schools' AIG program are in alignment with the district's vision and mission.

Elementary Education at RCS

Thank you for visiting our website.  This website provides users with an overview of the curriculum in kindergarten through fifth grade.  This website reflects the state's standards that teachers are required to teach at each grade level.  These standards are a combination of the North Carolina State Standards (English Language Arts and Math) and the NC Essential Standards (Science, Social Studies, etc.).  These are the standards that are assessed on the Literacy and Mathematics Assessments in kindergarten through second grade and on the End-of-Grade tests in grades three through five.

Below parents of Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade students can locate information regarding the standards-based reporting system. K-3 parents can also access information on Read to Achieve implementation.

We hope that this information will be helpful to you and that you will use it as a reference throughout the year.  If you have questions, talk with your child's teacher or principal.

Our Elementary Schools strive to:

Science, Technology, Engineering, Math

What is STEM?

STEM education is active and focuses on a student-centered learning environment. Students engage in questioning, problem solving, collaboration, and hands-on activities while they address real life issues. In STEM education, teachers function as classroom facilitators. They guide students through the problem-solving process and plan projects that lead to mastery of content and STEM proficiency. STEM proficient students are able to answer complex questions, investigate global issues, and develop solutions for challenges and real world problems while applying the rigor of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics content in a seamless fashion. STEM proficient students are logical thinkers, effective communicators and are technologically, scientifically, and mathematically literate

Why is STEM important for our students?

It is likely that every job in the 21st Century will require some skill in science, technology, engineering and math.

The integration of engineering and technology into the mathematics and science curriculum will make instruction more significant and appealing.  It will also provide students with the skills that are essential to success in the 21st Century.

STEM is a very important role in promoting our students to be ready for college, career and life. We are teaching students that will compete with the world for careers.  Let's make sure they are ready for the 21st Century!
