Integrated School and Community Planning Letter

January 3, 2017

Dear Rockingham County School Families,

Happy New Year! I hope you and your family had a wonderful and restful holiday season.

As part of our new Strategic Plan Vision 2020 one key goal is to always provide high quality educational opportunities for every child in Rockingham County at the lowest cost. Over the last few years we have noticed a decline in our student enrollment, which impacts state and local funding. Since some of our schools have empty classrooms, the Board of Education has hired NC State Institute for Transportation Research and Education to take a look at three things: (1) examine our expected future growth over the next ten years, (2) evaluate the capacities of all our schools, and (3) help identify options that would utilize our schools better and reduce costs.

As we await the results of this study in the spring of 2017, I wanted to let you know that we will keep you informed. Before any recommendations would be finalized, the Board of Education would conduct community meetings in any schools that might be affected so they can hear feedback from parents in those schools.  Please stay tuned for more information.

I am so proud of the progress that our students have made in the last few years.  It requires all of us to work together to educate our children.  Thank you for your continued support of Rockingham County Schools.
