Men's Golf and Baseball Win Mid State 3A Conference Titles

Golf Conference News 
 Our Golf Team captured the Mid-State 3A Conference Championship Monday at Indian Valley Golf Course in Alamance County.  The team total of 293 was 12 strokes better than second place McMichael.  Tripp Suumerlin again led the way.  His 18 hole total was 67.  Other counting scores were from freshmen Noah Conner (72), senior Jordan Cross (76) and senior Mitchell Mikonis (77). Congratulations to our team and coach Williams. They will next play in the Mid-East regional next Monday for a chance to advance to the state championships.
Regional News 
On Monday, May 2 the team won the 3A Regional Championship held at Indian Valley.  In the 18 hole match, Tripp Summerlin led the team with a score of 68.  Other counting scores were Jordan Cross 72, Noah Connor 77, and 79 shot by both Mitchell Mikonis and Josh Hudson.
3A State Tournament News

The Cougar Golf Team wrapped up one of the best seasons in school history yesterday by finishing fifth in the 3A State Tournament at Whispering Pines in Pinehurst.  Tripp Summerlin shot the lowest score at the tournament in school history and finished second in the individual standings.  The team’s seniors, Tripp Summerlin, Jordan Cross, Mitchell Mikonis, Josh Hudson, and Eric Reichenbauch will be missed next year.  Their hard work and dedication has resulted in three conference championships, two conference tournament championships, one regional title, and four straight appearances in the state tournament.  Congratulations to Coach Mike Williams and his team for their outstanding performance.

Baseball Regular Season MidState 3A Conference News  
Hit-less going into the bottom of the sixth inning and down one to nothing to Eastern Guilford, the Cougar Varsity Baseball Team rallied to score two runs which proved to be enough to win the game and to earn the title of Mid-State 3A Regular Season Champions.  To start the sixth inning Landon Warner led off with a double. Zach Bullard put down a sacrifice bunt to move Warner to third. Bullard was hit in the back running to first allowing Warner to score and Bullard to move to second. A sacrifice bunt by Gavin Taylor moved Bullard to third.  Trying to pitch around Jehu Zarate, Eastern’s catcher had a passed ball scoring Bullard.  Coach Barber said after the game, “Angel Zarate held Eastern Guilford in check. He allowed only 3 hits in six innings. Jehu Zarate came in and got the save in the seventh to win the conference championship. Jonathan Pulliam had a great defensive game in left field. He made a lot of big plays in the outfield for us; just like he has done all year.”  
MidState 3A Conference Tournament News 
The Varsity Baseball Team advanced to the second round of the Mid-State 3A Conference Tournament with a 6 to 4 win over McMichael last night.  Coach Barber said after the game, “Jehu Zarate got the win on the mound tonight and Angel Zarate picked up the save…Gavin Taylor and Angel Zarate had 2 hits apiece and scored 2 runs to lead us offensively.” 
Cougars Beat Eastern Alamance in the Second Round

In a pitchers dual, the Cougars came out on top 3 to nothing last night against Eastern Alamance in the second round of the Mid-State 3A Conference Tournament. Angel Zarate led the Cougars on the mound throwing a complete game allowing only 3 hits while striking out 6.  The Cougars had six hits to the Eagles three.  Zarate also went 2 for 3 at the plate. Tony Deluna had the big hit of the night in the second inning with a single that drove in two runs. Jehu Zarate had a RBI in the sixth to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead going into the seventh. Ending the game in classic style, the Cougars turned four, six, three double play to shut out Eastern Alamance. The Cougars will host the championship game of the conference tournament Friday at 7:00. Let’s fill the stands Friday night to support your baseball team as they continue their very successful season.

 Northern and Northeast Schedule to Play Friday at 4:30
Due to weather postponements, Northern Guilford and Northeast Guilford are schedule to play at RCHS on Friday at 4:30.  The winner will then play RCHS following the play off game.  Today's games hing on field conditions and weather.
Conference Tournament Cancelled
Due to weather, the conference tournament will not be completed.  Seeding for the state playoffs will be done on Monday.  Our Cougars will play at home either Tuesday or Wednesday.  Their opponent will be determined by the seeding on Monday. 
Team Advances to the Second Round with Seventh Inning Win Over Union Pines 

The Cougars advanced to the second round of the state playoffs with a 4-3 win over Union Pines.  Elijah Julian and Tony Deluna led the Cougars at the plate going three for four. Deluna had the game tying double in the bottom of the seventh inning driving in Elijah Julian with two outs to tie the game at 3-3.  Zachary Bullard hit a deep fly ball to centerfield that was misplayed and DeLuna scored the winning run. Bailey Jones also added a single and a RBI. Jehu Zarate threw a strong 5 2/3 innings.  Angel Zarate got the win coming into the game in the sixth and holding Union Pines scoreless.  The Cougars are now 19-7 on the season and will host Northwood this Saturday at the RCHS Baseball Diamond. Game time will be 7:00.
