Activities

Battle of the Books

The purpose of the Battle of the Books program is to encourage middle school students to read quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the area of young adult literature.  The game format at district, regional, and state competitions creates interest and excitement in reading.

Through the fun and excitement of the competition, students improve reading skills, mature in their choices of reading materials, and acquire a broader knowledge base. Even during the height of the competition, students and coaches should remember that the goal is to READ, not necessarily to win!

Students who are participating in Battle of the Books may access Sora to read the books online or on their phones. When you access Sora, select Rockingham County Schools and Holmes Middle School. Login with the first part of your email. Your password is your birthday: month, day, year.

Math Counts

Math Formulas

Math Counts, a national enrichment program, increases enthusiasm for and enhances achievement in middle school mathematics by building math skills, promoting logical thinking, and sharpening students’ analytical and problem-solving skills.  The National Society of Professional Engineers and CAN Insurance Companies started the Math Counts program in 1983. Current sponsors include the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, NASA, and the General Motors and Cray Research Foundations. Members study together and compete with students across the state to solve math problems.

For more information, view the MathCounts website.

Student Leadership

Our student council is made up of representatives from each sixth, seventh, and eighth grade homeroom.  The student body elects officers who provide leadership and effective representation for HMS students. The student council meets periodically with their sponsor to plan projects that will make Holmes Middle School stronger. Every spring student council members serve as tour guides for fifth grade students who will attend Holmes as sixth graders in August.  During Teacher Appreciation Week, the student council usually provides refreshments for our teachers. The sponsor is Mrs. Grogan. mgrogan@rock.k12.nc.us
