Erica McDonough

Media Coordinator - Erica McDonough

Erica McDonough is the School Library Media Coordinator at Douglass Elementary School. She is originally from Reidsville, North Carolina, and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She is currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Library Science through the University of Kentucky’s online program.

Prior to joining Douglass Elementary, Mrs. McDonough worked as a second-grade teacher for two and a half years within the Rockingham County Schools district. She has been serving in her current role at Douglass since December 2024 and brings a strong instructional background and passion for literacy to the school community.

In her role, Mrs. McDonough oversees all aspects of the school library program, including processing, cataloging, repairing, and inventorying library materials, as well as managing and cataloging teacher resources. She teaches K–5 enhancement classes for part of the year, coordinates book check-in and check-out procedures, plans schoolwide reading promotions, and hosts the school book fair twice annually. She also coaches the school’s Battle of the Books team, assists with the yearbook, serves as the school webmaster managing social media platforms, leads collection development efforts, and acts as the lead technology representative on campus.

Outside of school, Mrs. McDonough is an avid reader who enjoys sharing her love of books with students. She is married, has three dogs—two German shepherds and a husky—and has an identical twin sister.

Media Center Mission

"Douglass Media Center's mission is to prepare students to be effective seekers and users of information while fostering a lifelong joy for reading."

The Media Center is the "hub" of the school.  Not only do our students check out appealing books, they are provided the opportunity to become successful library users whether here at Douglass or at the many public libraries.  Also a large part of their experience will be technology, technology, technology!  

Please take time to talk to your child(ren) and find out all about the wonderful and thrilling things that are taking place in the Media Center and Douglass classrooms.  You are one of your best child's teachers!!

Destiny Catalog

The destiny catalog lists all of the books we house in our library's collection on campus at Douglass.

Fiction

Our collection is filled with everybody picture books. We have separate book bins for Kindergarten at the front of the library to help them learn about how to checkout books. Our chapter book section is generified and includes: Adventure, Animal Stories, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, Humor, Mystery, Realistic Fiction, Scary Stories, Science Fiction, Sports Fiction, Superhero Stories. We also have a separate graphic novel section.

How to Stay Safe Online 

Common Sense Media provides digital citizenship, internet safety, and other great "cyber" activities for students. Login with your Rockingham County Schools username and password: Common Sense Media - Digital Citizenship

Students will be working through a digital citizenship tech pathway on Learning.com with catered lessons for every grade level on some days in media. View the Learning.com Curriculum Map here!

Digital Reading

Sora is a digital reading app where students can borrow eBooks and audiobooks from our school's digital library for free. Students can login with their Rockingham County Schools gmail account and password. A parent portal is currently in development, until then parents can opt their child out of Sora entirely.

Epic is a free website for kids that has a wide variety of books, audiobooks, learning videos, and more.

Classroom Libraries

Parents can complete an opt out form that should be returned to their teacher.

NC Public Library Access

All students can use their student ID number to check out books from NC Public Library and NC Public Digital Library. Parents will be able to opt their child out of all public library access.
