BEGINNING ART

This course introduces students to the foundations of visual art through hands-on projects focused on the elements of art, principles of design, and basic techniques. Students explore drawing, painting, and mixed media while learning how art connects to personal experience and everyday life. Emphasis is placed on skill-building, creativity, and confidence in artistic expression.
INTERMEDIATE ART
Prerequisite: Beginning Art, Credit: 1, Grades: 9-12, Weight: S
Students build on foundational skills while exploring more complex techniques, materials, and ideas. This course encourages experimentation, creative problem-solving, and thoughtful use of the elements and principles of design. Students begin developing a personal style while learning to reflect on their own work and that of others.
PROFICIENT ART
Prerequisite: Intermediate Art, Credit: 1, Grades: 10-12, Weight: H
This course focuses on refining technical skills and developing intentional, concept-driven artwork. Students work more independently, explore a broader range of media, and analyze artistic choices within historical and cultural contexts. Critical thinking, craftsmanship, and meaningful artistic decision-making are emphasized.
ADVANCED ART
Prerequisite: Proficient Art, Credit: 1, Grade: 10-12, Weight: H
Advanced Visual Arts challenges students to create original, high-quality artwork that demonstrates strong technical skill and personal voice. Students engage in sustained investigations, advanced media exploration, and critical reflection. The course prepares students for college-level art study by emphasizing artistic intent, professional practices, and portfolio development in alignment with NC visual arts standards.
IB VISUAL ART.

IB Visual Arts SL is a creative and inquiry-based course that encourages students to explore ideas, techniques, and cultural contexts through artmaking and reflection. Students develop technical skills while experimenting with different media and processes, document their growth in a process portfolio, and analyze artworks from diverse artists and cultures. The course emphasizes personal expression, critical thinking, and meaningful connections between art and the world around us.
Music
MARCHING BAND
Prerequisite: Band experience, audition, or previous instrumental training. Credits: 1, Grades: 9-10 (Beginning)/11-12 (Intermediate), Weight: S (H, upon Director recommendation) - Fall Semester (1st period)
Students will continue instrumental music instruction and growth with an emphasis on musical performance. The Marching Band performs at all home football games and selected away football games, competitions, and festivals across North Carolina, as well as local parades and school and civic community functions. Students will also participate in Band Camp a few weeks before school starts to help prepare for the upcoming season. Students will have several opportunities to expand their leadership and musical skills, both personally and collaboratively, through this course.
CONCERT BAND
Prerequisite: Band experience, audition, or previous instrumental training. Credits: 1, Grades: 9-10 (Beginning)/11-12 (Intermediate), Weight: S (H, upon Director recommendation) - Spring Semester
Students will continue to expand their musical understanding and technical skill development. Students will develop a basic knowledge of music theory, history, and literature while exploring a broad range of wind band literature. Students will study instrumental music in depth, including performing, sight reading, improvising, and notating and analyzing music. Students will perform two concerts during the semester and participate in area performances, including the MPA Concert Festival and other performance festivals across North Carolina.
JAZZ BAND
Prerequisite: Band experience, audition, or previous instrumental training. Credits: 1, Grades: 9-12, Weight: S (H, upon Director recommendation)
Must also be registered for Marching Band (Fall) or Concert Band (Spring) - Exceptions made at Director's request
Students will continue to expand their musical understanding and technical skill development. Students will expand into and study the history, theory, and literature of Jazz, Rhythm & Blues, Soul, Swing, Funk, Fusion, Big Band, Be-bop, and other related styles. Students will study instrumental music in depth, including performing, sight reading, improvising, and notating and analyzing music. Students will perform 1-2 concerts during the semeste,r as well as at school and civic community functions.
PIANO
Prerequisite: None, Credits: 1, Grades: 9-12, Weight: S
Embark on a musical journey with our beginner piano class! Perfect for students with little to no prior experience, this course lays a solid foundation in music theory and piano technique. Students will learn to read music, play basic chords and melodies, and understand note values. Unleash your inner musician and discover the joy of playing the piano!
